Coincident clearings in the trees north of Drei Annen Hohne looked like provding opportunities for across the valley shots, and so it proved. In the worst conditions for the whole time I waited for the train the 08:55 from Wernigerode to Brocken heads up the gradient.
I climbed higher up the hillside and found a better clearing offering a much better view across the valley. It took me a while to top the trees down....
Fresh snow in the trees.
Then the sun came out. It almost felt like an early X Files episode.
And the great view bathed in sunlight. Would it last.... time for much gnashing of teeth!
As suggested by another, it must be time for a Kate Bush song....
99 7240 heads the 09:40 from Wernigerode to Brocken out into the clearing in the commercial forestry.

So many options for fantastic shots.
Or one with fewer trees near the loco...
And even a bit of a glint.
And more of a glint for the close up.
Harz forest view
Or if you prefer, in colour. On balance I would go with the black and white but opinions sought vary!
A shot that nearly did for me.... From the previous across the valley location it was a dash back to the hire car, a quick drive down the valley, park up and climb the 300 odd feet up to the railway in a rush. Of course I went the wrong way too!! Despite the sun playing games it was all worth it in the end and there was even a hint of a rainbow. 99 7247 leads the 10:25 Wernigerode to Brocken up the hill just beyond Thumkuhlenkopf tunnel.
